Summer means time at the beach. If you take your beachgoing seriously, you might want to take a ride and visit one or both of the two here in New York that just landed on a new list of the best in America.

A guy named Stephen Leatherman, the self-proclaimed 'Dr. Beach' (which sounds better than Leather Man if he's become an expert after spending too much time in the sun), has reportedly been ranking beaches since 1991 based on a 50-point criteria. Some of that criteria include 'the presence of algae, the prevalence of rip tides and the cleanliness of the beach, plus air and water temperatures', according to CNN.
Actually, Dr. Beach had some real cred as a coastal scientist at Florida International University in Miami.
Citing its 'sand dunes and pristine location', the number one spot on Beach's list this year goes to Coopers Beach in Southampton on the east end of Long Island in New York.
Another New York beach landed among the Top 10: Main Beach in East Hampton.
Below is the complete Top 10:
1. Coopers Beach, Southampton, New York
2. Wailea Beach, Maui, Hawaii
3. Poipu Beach, Kauai, Hawaii
4. Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park, Naples, Florida
5. Main Beach, East Hampton, New York
6. Beachwalker Park, Kiawah Island, South Carolina
7. St. Andrews State Park, Panama City, Florida
8. Kaunaoa, Big Island, Hawaii
9. Lanikai Beach, Oahu, Hawaii
10. Coast Guard Beach, Cape Cod, Massachusetts
FYI, Dr. Beach recommends packing your patience if you want to visit either of the New York beaches that made his list this year. For getting to Cooper's Beach he says taking a shuttle is your best bet since traffic can be hectic and parking can be expensive.
